Whispers
“And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:11–12 NKJV
My five-year-old daughter loves to talk and tell stories, put on shows, and sing. She loves to me tell her secret plans for a surprise. She will look at me with mischievous eyes, mouthing for me to come close. I lean down and she whispers in my ear. Either I can’t hear what she has said, or her whisper isn’t a whisper at all—everyone can hear! She is still learning volume control, and often her volume is set to high and crazy. She wants me to whisper back to her, but most of the time she can’t hear me because she’s giggling and bouncing all over the place.
We can be like that too. The Lord bends low to whisper to us, and we’re too busy to hear. We expect the Lord’s voice to shake mountains, roar with thunder, and startle us to attention. And His voice can most definitely do that. But oh, how great is His still, small voice. How wonderful are His whispers.
Life can get busy, chaotic, messy. We can rush around with no time to hear a small sound. So much happening and we hope we’ll find the Lord in the busyness. But more often than not, the Lord is waiting at the edge of chaos. Waiting for us to step away, be still, and know that He is God.
Quiet your heart and listen. Breathe and rest. Let God whisper into your soul.
God has a plan and His wisdom cannot be measured, because He is wisdom. Lean in without fear. He is Alpha and Omega. He knows your yesterdays and tomorrows. He has placed every stone on your path for His good pleasure, for His glory. Choose to step where He leads, for those stones will strengthen each step you take in faith. As you grow in the knowledge of who God is, your eyes will see more clearly His majesty.
Stand in awe, soul-exposed before your Creator, your King, your Abba Father. Bow your heart in praise before His holiness, as He pours His love and Spirit upon you. Fix your eyes on the God of wonders. Wait for His leading, wait for His revealing, and wait for His whispers.
God’s whisper is soft, personal, and intimate. Yet one softly spoken word to the heart can explode into life-giving grace that promises assurance and hope. To stand—with His Word breathing into your heart—is to stand in His power and love. Without doubt. Without fear. Be still and know His love. Let His whispers in the quiet place, become a kiss upon your soul.

How timely this has come to my email. Yesterday at church the song sung by a soloist was "Be Still". I had to read this a couple times, I kept trying to hurry to get it read. I need to slow down and be still and take time to let the words sink in. God is always on time and He wastes nothing to get us to see and hear him. My job is being restructured and I will not have one in about a month. I hear the words inside say "here we go again, losing another job." I know God is with me, I just have to look to Him who sees and plans all things to work for my good. Praising Him for what He is going to do with and for me. The journey continues...
