Small Prayers
“Dear Jesus, please help Aunt Brittni find her glasses.”
Three year old Lucy had been occupied setting up the Dora’s dollhouse in my family room when something (or should I say Someone?) prompted me to ask her to pause for a moment and pray with me for Brittni’s lost sunglasses. She was upset because not only were they new, they were expensive—her big birthday present that Jonathan had given her just two weeks ago.
With our heads bowed, and with Dora the Explorer and her pals Diego and Boots silently looking on, we asked the Creator of the universe to graciously hear what to some may seem like an insignificant request.
That evening, Greg and I were out to dinner with some friends when the answer to Lucy’s and my prayer came via text from Brittni:
“I found my glasses . . . Jonathan had forgotten he had put them behind the visor in his car for safe keeping!”
Just a few months ago, I was the prayer director for Harvest America, a nationwide evangelistic outreach. Much prayer had been offered on behalf of all those who were inviting their loved ones to hear the gospel simulcast from Angel Stadium to over 2400 venues across the United States. What happened exceeded our expectations and tens of thousands of commitments were registered for Christ!
I wonder how it is that God not only hears and graciously answers the “big prayers,” like those for Harvest America, but also simple, ordinary requests for lost glasses. Not only does He hear those small prayers, but He delights in them!
I am amazed when I consider the mind-blowing miracles Jesus preformed while he was on this earth. One in particular touches my heart. The cry of a poor leper, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” And with a loving touch Jesus replies, “I am willing; be cleansed!”
“Lord, if you are willing . . . ” This applies to all our requests. We don’t know how the Lord may choose to answer a prayer for a nation, the salvation of a soul, or help to find lost sunglasses. (I can only imagine the angels must smile at such small requests.) But I do know this: I have learned there is no request too big or too small for Him to hear. He delights and welcomes them; never once does He say, “Not now, I’m too busy!”
I read a little poem by John Newton recently that may be helpful to remind ourselves whenever we hesitate in praying big or small prayers:
“Thou art coming to a King
Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and power are such,
None can ever ask too much.”
. . . or too little!
As Martin Luther is quoted, “Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness.”

Dear Cathe, I just woke up this morning and turned on my computer. Pastor's Good News was at the top of the list.
It was very early and I decided to listen to his message, 2 Kings 7. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I'm praising God and applauding God. Then I love to read your notes and it was on the same line of teaching. No one has ever quite shared this message the same way as the two of you, together. I have been searching for an answer for my healing. I have infected arthritis in my knees which has the same emotional symptons as a leper. I have an appointment with a doctor today who wants to do surgery. We shall see what he decides. I think I had a divine appointment this morning listenteng to this message. In Christ's love, May

What a beautiful post! Thank you for reminding us to teach our young children to pray for everything. God can even join your family together with the topic of simple sunglasses. The fact that your family can turn something as mundane as sunglasses into a spiritual lesson reveals the love of God within your family. Thank you for your service and love for Christ.

Absolutely lovely! About 1.5 years ago, I could not find my new prescription reading glasses, valued at $400. I did not have to pay that much as my insurance covered most of the cost. However, if I lost them within a two year period before I could get another pair, I would have to pay full price. I looked everywhere at home, emptied my purse several times, and looked all over my desk at work. Finally, the next day at work, I prayed and asked Him to help me find them as I could not afford the $400 expense at that time. Within a few mins. after the prayer, I was prompted to look in my purse, AGAIN, after having emptied it fully of its contents several times. I opened my desk drawer, and my glasses, in the case, were literally sitting right on top of my purse. I gurantee that they were not there earlier as I had opened the drawer a number of times throughout the day to get into my purse. Yes, He DOES answer even the smallest prayers! Oh WHAT a God we have!

This is beautiful reading...I often pray...or should I say carry a constant dialogue with my savior. But it never ceases to amaze me how he is in the little thing as well as the big things in our lives. We must continue to pray daily for everyone even perfect strangers you come across in your travels. We all need prayer and we are our bothers keeper, whether we know them or not. Continue to love, believe and have faith that God is all we need to get through this jouney...and one day when he calls us home we will see his beautiful face.

Dear Sister in the Lord Cathe, Thank you so much for reminding us how our Lord takes care of both the big and the small concerns in life when we put our trust and faith in Him. I know God led me to this webpage about the women's ministry Virtue for a reason, and it uplifted my heart and soul since I have been going through many trials lately. God is my rock and He used you in sharing the story about the sunglasses in a more powerful way than you will ever know. I want to attend the bible studies for women on a Wed at the OC location to fellowship because I have been hurting and that is when we need to turn to our sisters in the Lord, not away. God has a purpose for "all" of us to be able to share, care and uplift. In 1969 this young teenage surfer girl from Belmont Shores in Long Beach gave her heart to the Lord at Pastor Chuck's "tent" church and never looked back. Your story encouraged me to reach out, and sometimes that is hard when so many others are hurting far greater than myself.

2012 was very difficult for my daughter and me. She is 21 and I am 62. We have no where to live, but I know the Lord is there every step. We never know where we are going the next day. We have been protected, loved, and cared for by Jesus Christ. We feel like we are out in the wilderness, just like when God told Abraham to leave and he did not know where he was going. I am in the library right now on the internet. I have written 2 faith books through this trial. I know that we are blessed, we just do not feel blessed, but we know this is happening for a reason. I have listened to your husband a long time. It used to be the radio, then we came to your church in Irvine. I attended the Bible Studies for a while, but the last year WOW! We trust God and have BIG FAITH!

Thank you Cathe for reminding us of our loving and caring Father in heaven. I am a single mom and I've been listening to Greg's messages over the radio for some time now and as well as logging on to the internet to see and read what you have to share. I've been through a lot (good and bad times) and I know I've come to my destination where God wanted me to be. I praise the Lord for what He has done for me and my children and I'm making it a practice that we pray for everything. I even pray with my little one who's 8 years old now, to teach him to know and understand that we have to pray for everything . . . little things and bigger things.
I also thank each and every one of you for your comments. They are also encouragements and guidance for me. Thank you Cathe and everyone. May our good Lord continue to bless us all.
