Like Arrows
“Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.” —Psalm 127:4 NIV
Here’s a fun project to do with your little arrows. After listening to the “Arrows” series by Pastor Levi Lusko, I have been even more intrigued with arrows and the biblical meaning behind them. It was a series based on raising children and it held so many great truths. One of my favorite takeaways was “They can’t know what we don’t teach them. They can’t follow what you don’t show them.”
This creation is not only a fun thing to do with your children, but also can serve as a great piece for any space in your house (I currently have mine in a worn mason jar on my desk) as a sweet reminder to “live towards the target.”
What you’ll need:
- Wooden dowels
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Cardboard
- Leather string or twine
- Hot glue gun
- Feathers
- Washi tape
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
Directions:
- Paint the wooden dowels your desired colors and let them air dry. We chose white, black, and mint. The great thing about acrylic paint is that it’s washable, so don’t worry when the kids get it all over themselves.
- Next you will cut out triangles that will act as the arrowheads. I measured a 1 1/2″ triangle on all three sides (which was proportional for my wooden dowels) and then let the boys cut them out, with safety scissors of course. You will need two triangles per wooden dowel.
- Paint the triangles and let them air dry. You’ll only need to paint one side, as you will be gluing the two unpainted sides together in step 4. Once everything has dried, you can then begin assembly.
- Start with one triangle piece, painted side down. You’ll then grab your hot glue gun and glue the dowel to the one triangle. Next glue the second triangle to the dowel to finish the arrowhead. I pinched the two cardboard triangles together to really get that “arrowhead look.”
- Take a handful of feathers and place them all around the other end of the dowel. Once you have them situated the way you like, you will then take your leather string or twine and wrap that around the end of the feathers to hold them in place. I wrapped my dowel 10–15 times and then tied a knot at the end.
- We then decorated with some fun gold glitter washi tape and took them outside to play.
