Apple Pie Pizza
Apple Pie Pizza
This past September, I did an apple study with my kids. Part of that study was baking different delicious apple treats together. After making all the basics—pies, dumplings and turnovers—I remembered this recipe. It’s a unique twist on the traditional “apple pie” and so easy to make!
Ingredients:
For Pizza:
- Pizza dough (I use 2 of the Trader Joe’s pizza dough packages. You can use a pre-made, thinner crust pizza dough too.)
- 3 cups apples, cored, skinned, and sliced
- 1 stick + 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
For Glaze:
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (or more if needed)
Directions:
- Sautee your sliced apples in the 3 tablespoons of butter until soft.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out pizza dough on a greased pizza pan (not a stone). If you are using raw dough, it might need to be at room temperature to get it all rolled out, and you will need to bake it for about 5 minutes in the preheated oven before putting toppings on. If you are using a ready-made pizza crust, skip that and move to step 3.
- In a bowl, mix together oats, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, melt your stick of butter. Let it cool a bit, and add your teaspoon of vanilla to the butter.
- Pour the melted butter and vanilla mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well.
- Put your soft apples on top of your dough. Now sprinkle the oat mixture on top, covering most of the apples.
- Pop it in the oven for about 25 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
- Once it is out of the oven and cooling a bit, make your glaze. Melt the 1/4 cup butter. Add the vanilla, powdered sugar, and milk. You want it to be thin enough to glaze over the top easily, so add milk until it is a pourable texture.
- Glaze the pizza while it is still warm, and serve!
