Valentine’s Day is one of my all-time favorite holidays! I especially love vintage valentine cards and Valentine’s Day decor. Here is a way of showing the “seamstress” in your life a little love on Valentine’s Day. These adorable little pin cushions are easy and inexpensive, and still have a vintage feel that is so heart-warming.

Supplies you will need:

  • Felt sheets, in the color of your choice (about $.29 each at the craft store)
  • Sand
  • Funnel
  • Lace
  • Pins with multicolored ball heads
  • Beads, pearls
  • Vintage valentines (you can purchase digital downloads from etsy.com too)
  • Sewing machine

Instructions:

(This will be done just like making a pillow, only smaller.)

  1. Decide on the shape you would like your pin cushion to be and cut the felt out in that shape, twice. Make sure both pieces match. Pin the two pieces together. If you are using lace for the edges, pin that around the edges too.
  2. Sew together the two pieces around the edge. Stop about 2 inches before the end, leaving it open.
  3. Through the hole, turn the pieces inside out so that you can’t see the seam and the lace is sticking out.
  4. Using your funnel, fill the felt with sand. You want to fill it until it is really stuffed tight but you still have enough room to sew it shut. It needs to be filled tight so that the pins can stick in the pin cushion securely.
  5. Sew your hole closed.
  6. Fun part! Take your ball-head pins and start beading them. Add 2–3 beads and push them in the edges. Get creative; decorate your pincushion with all different colors and designs of beaded pins.
  7. Now place your valentine on top of the pin cushion and pin it on with your beaded pins.

This gift not only sends a sweet Valentine’s message, but is also very practical and useful. And every time she uses it, she will remember the time and love you put into it. Have fun creating!
