Trusting God for Our Children
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread” (Psalm 37:25 ESV).
Sometimes, we mothers have great difficulty trusting the Lord as we watch our children going through difficult trials. Perhaps we bear up well through our own tough times, but watching our children face them requires an altogether different degree of trust!
It can be a temptation for us as parents to step in and play the part of God by overprotecting or attempting to rescue them from all trouble. We pray, “Oh Lord, spare my child from all trial, pain, and difficulty.” But as I reflect back on my own experience, it has been precisely through these times that I have learned the most about the character of God.
The blessing of firsthand experience of the faithfulness of God can’t be picked up simply as if by osmosis. We must remember that God will prove Himself faithful to them even as He has to us. Our God is able to teach them what we sometimes cannot. Remember, they need to learn that they not only have parents on earth, but a Father in heaven who is far better.
So we need to pray for our children, whatever their age, and then hopefully model a good example of a heart that trusts in God’s goodness, promises, and faithfulness.
The verses from this passage in Daily Light are just the right prescription for our anxious hearts:
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.—His bread will be given him; his water will be sure.—The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.—My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.—Be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’
“He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna . . . that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”—Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ ”
(Psalm 37:25, Isaiah 33:16, 1 Kings 17:6, Philippians 4:19, Hebrews 13:5, Deuteronomy 8:3, John 6:32–34)

Thank you so much Cathe for this devotion today. I'm truly blessed to have 3 beautiful children. Today's devotion has opened another door. It has been a difficult road for my middle child who is 20 yrs old and being so hardhearted and always contrary to the Word of God. Again, thank you :) I needed this today.
God Bless you and Greg and your precious family.

Perfect timing! :) I was just fretting about this- my daughter is almost 18 and yesterday I was thinking about how I wish I could protect her from pain, frustrations, failures, etc that go along with life. Thanks for the reassurance that God is always right there for her. Also, I love the pic of your daughter-in-law and granddaughter....they are beautiful!!

Wow! I needed this so much today. I do find it so difficult to just let go and let God be in control of my children's lives. They are both grown and parents themselves, but I find myself trying to protect them, and my grandchildren too. Thank you for this wonderful insight into God's word and reminder that God, and only God can always be with my children and grandchildren.

Thank you so much. As a grandmother who has a 14 yr old grandson that lives with a single mom and is heading down a road of destruction, I keep praying for him and his mom. The relationship is very bad with both of them and he is not doing well in school. I have done my best to help, but it has only brought more trouble into their home. So I guess I need to let God handle it, and trust in Him. Please pray for them.

Mary Ann,
Your comment touched my heart. I am a single mother of a 14 yr old son & had a conversation with my mother tonight on the struggles I'm having with my son. I cried before I logged onto the computer tonight and I know the Lord heard. I just want to encourage you to be the best grandma you can be to this young man. He needs a lot of love just as my son does. Cover him in prayer and never stop. I prayed for your grandson to embrace his identity in Christ amongst many others promises God has for him. I prayed for you and your daughter to receive God's wisdom and guidance to help you through. I prayed for God's Grace to be in all of your lives and especially in this situation. I prayed God's protection for you all, especially your grandson. May God continue to give you the love and compassion to demonstrate to this special young man. You are children of the Most High King. His Word says, love covers a multitude of sins 1 Peter 4:8. God bless you and your family always. -Melissa

I too needed to read this. 7 years ago I lost my 16 year old son to leukemia. Boy, I was very upset and wondered why God did not answer our prayers. He did...he stopped the suffering, pain, got rid of the disease and made him better. And I thank God for that and that He got my family through this terrible time. He does answer prayers in different ways.

Cathe,
In the last year and a half my 3rd oldest son and daughter-in-law moved to Florida, my youngest son graduated and went off to college. My oldest son with Aspergers, developed Paranoid Schizophrenia and was hospitalized three times, and my daughter (and my best friend), son-in-law, and four grandchildren moved across the country. Talk about trusting God, but I'm learning what a Big God we serve. He has given us the privilege of having these children for a time, but they are always His in the end. He asks us only to do our best and to trust Him. What we would wish for our children may not be in His perfect plan. That's why, He is God, and we are mothers.

When I read the comments of similar situations, grandmothers and mothers who are experiencing similar pain with their children, it puts me on the same path, trusting the Lord.
It really helps to read other stories, but puts me to shame. All of my children and grandchildren are in good health, but so far away. As a born again Christian, they don't want their children around me, and categorize me as crazy. Reading the daily devotional and others comments, showed me to put my pain into prayers, and be more grateful to the Lord."

WOW! Like many mothers on here, I too needed this right now. A friendly reminder that God Almighty is in control. I'm a work in progress and so are my children. I'm constantly working on not operating out of the emotions that come with life, but instead putting the promises of God over my situation(s). I paused to pray for each mother and grandmother on here. God bless your hearts and may His blessings continuously follow you and your children and grandchildren. Thanks for sharing. ~M

I just heard that verse in class today (Phillipians 4:19). How sweet the Lord truly is in all the promises He gives to us. What a beautiful daughter-in-law and granddaughter you are blessed with.

I had such a touching day with my son. He's 19 and moved out with a 17 year old. I don't understand how her parents could be okay with that. But, by the grace of God, he moved back home today. He is back home safely with his father and stepmother. I need to put all of my faith in the Lord and know that He will protect and guide him. Thank you.

Our life has been very difficult lately. I pray everyday for the Lord to be with me and guide me, help me with patience, trust, and faith. My granddaughters are in foster care and want to come home. My son has done everything they have asked him to do - they have verbally told him that they are recommending the girls come to live with him at the next court day in November. He knows the Lord, but is very discouraged. We just received a court letter stating the worker is recommending the girls stay in foster care another 6 months. I want to fix everything, but can't. I struggle with my faith. The mother continues to break all of the rules and has not done what the court has asked her to do, but it seems the extra 6 months is to give her a chance to complete everything. I know I have to give it all to God and have faith. Please pray for our family and my precious granddaughters. Thank you.

Thank you Lord for leading me here tonight...I struggle with being too overprotective of my daughters. Especially since my son was killed a couple of years ago in a car accident. I know to worry is sin and a sign of not trusting in the Lord. I pray for forgiveness for my worry and for continued faith.
Thank you for the reminder that God cares all the time!

Here it is at 4:40 am and I am searching for how to help, or do I help my 20 year old son...away at college. He has always been strong in his faith all through his childhood and high school years. He participated in church, spoke in church, and while he was on his high school football team (1st string center) held devotions and bought every varsity, j.v. player and coach an Athelete's Bible!
I found out almost a year ago when he called to tell me that he had been caught drinking--but he assured me he was only holding the bottle and he had just a sip to fit in with the crowd. Now I found out the truth is he does drink. What do I do? I think about the prodigal son--who does return home. As a parent, does God want me to try to step in and help him since he is an underage drinker or am I suppose to let go and let God help him at this point?
I am so upset and I confess I have worried over this! I know my kids are not perfect, but they have never been in trouble, been troublemakers, or even ever led me to this point...so I do not know how to handle this situation. Please help. I know God led me here:) Thank you God!

Hi Sheri,
I just read your comment & I felt with you, I prayed for you & your son. I know it's been a while since you had your comment down, however I wanted to tell you that you need to trust God with ALL of your heart and He will direct your path. I know trusting God is not always natural, especially when we see our kids behaviors change, but still pray everyday that God will show you a way and He will. My husband is an alcoholic and I'm blessed to say that God had been with us through the years. We have two beautiful children, 15 & 17 yrs old. Of all the comments I received and all the noice I hear about alcoholic parents around me, I decided to trust God & let Him guide us. We've been praying for my husband of 18 years and I know that when it's God's time, my husband will be saved & set free. I live with this hope in my heart and I pray that all goes well in your family.
May God bless you!
L.H.

First of all, thank you so much for the archive and current women's study. I do not attend Harvest, but love and am thankful for you all. I have been so blessed by the studies that I do on my own. I do the easy one first, and the the more difficult ones last along side my Bible and commentary. I have learned so much from the studies on line. Please keep putting them there for us who want to grow in the Lord and do not have the benefit of attending Harvest church. Today, after I just finished printing the studies of Nehemiah (I am almost done. I am on chapters 10-11) I began to browse the website and am so blessed to come across this part of it. I love the pictures of Cathe and the family and have been so blessed by Greg and Cathe's trust in the Lord; especially with "Topher." My heart is broken over some issues with my prodigal daughter and grandson. It sure is a blessing to find this message and comments to bring fresh air into my soul! I need to back off from the situation physically and trust our Lord Jesus to do His perfect will in their lives. Thank you for confirming what I already had in my heart to do. Thank you Lord Jesus for your faithfulness and your faithful servants in Christ. Love you in Jesus! Paula

Our Lord is so faithful and true. Christ Jesus our heavenly father knows what's best for his children and when we finally get that fact branded into our mind then we learn to let go and let God. Unfortunately for some of us, this comes only after years of brokenhearted trails as we attempt to be mini gods, his helpers... but all we do is become enablers. It's so hard to know when to back off and let God take over. We see a need and naturally we attempt to help and make it all better, but in the end, we only hinder those we love and painfully we begin to realize that we must step aside and let God do His will; mold and build that character that must be broken before it can be of any use and in the end what is our reward - peace, a peace that passes all understanding and a freedom that only comes after complete surrender to His will for our lives... I am still a work in progress, continually praying for guidance and wisdom in all things... In the end, He is in control of all and we best step aside and let Him lead. One tough life lesson learned.

When our two children were 1 and 2 years old, I would wonder how I could ever surrender them totally to the Lord. I "knew" that HE was completely trustworthy and always kept HIS promises..still, while my mind was telling me one thing, my heart was saying something else..."Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Prov. 3:5-6
As I prayed, I felt total peace concerning our two little blessings from God. In an inaudible, yet clear voice, God revealed to me that it would be better for our children to be in Timbuktu, in the center of HIS will, than to be right under my nose and out of HIS will. My heart agreed. Many years later, my daughter was going on a short-term mission trip to Kenya. She shared, "Mom, just think..Kenya is further than Timbuktu!"...Yes, God has a sense of humor! Our son has been called to preach the Good News! God is faithful and completely trustworthy!
