Top Three Reasons People Don’t Pray
The instructor’s voice was gentle and soothing as she explained the final stretches before the end of the workout. “These may be the only three minutes of quiet you have all day; so take this time to be still.” She walked to the back of the room and switched the lights off. The room was silent except for the music and the sound of her voice.
At first, every part of me wanted to jump to my feet and head out the door. After all, the clock was ticking away precious minutes and I had a list of chores calling me.
But I leaned back onto the blue foam mat alongside 20 other sweating, or should I say glowing, ladies in the Barre Class. Someone had given us permission—not just permission, but instruction—to hush and be still. In the following weeks, this became my favorite moment in the hour-long exercise class.
Those words sunk in: “the only minutes in your day you have to stop and be still.” So I’m thinking about prayer this morning. Listening and worshipping, praising and petitioning our Heavenly Father is, sadly for some, barely three minutes tagged on at the end of a busy day. Sigh…“Lord forgive me, bless me, and good night!” does not make for a rich prayer life.
How often we excuse ourselves, thinking these few moments are all we can afford to give. After all, who knows exactly how much time we devote to prayer, praise, and petition? We’d rather not know. But God does.
Now don’t jump up and head out the door just yet; it’s time to think about this for just a few more minutes. Why is it that we neglect to pray? I suspect most of us don’t pray because:
- We don’t think we have time.
- We don’t think it is important.
- We don’t believe that it makes any difference.
First of all, we do have the time! According a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, a Neilson Study reported that in 2010, Americans spend 63.5 billion minutes on social networks and blogs.1 How much time do you spend on social networks like Facebook? Another Nielson study indicates that an average Internet user spends 68 hours on the Internet per month, about 2 hours and 6 minutes per day. 3 I rest my case; we do have the time to pray. As someone put it recently, “One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.”4
Secondly, prayer is necessary! We know that while He was on earth, Jesus was dependent on spending vital time in prayer with the Father. How much more should we? Hebrews 5:7 reveals the passionate prayer life of our Lord. During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission.
Before you think that you don’t need to take time to pray, think of the staggering defeat of the Israelite army when they went up to fight against the little city called Ai. Confident with victory over the mighty fortress of Jericho, they neglected to pray and consult the Lord before going to battle. Bold and careless, they were soundly defeated.
Lastly, prayer does make a difference! As Greg has often quoted, prayer is “not for getting man’s will done in heaven, but for getting God’s will done on earth.”3
Prayer’s not magic; it isn’t simply submitting a grocery list to God. Remember that our Father is in heaven and we are on earth. But as His children, we can be confident that He wants to bless, use, guide, and provide for us. Perhaps “you have not because you ask not.”
How’s is your prayer life? Don’t you realize that what breathing is to our physical lives, prayer is to our spiritual lives?
“Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Amen! Cathe, wonderful. Thank you for this.
Prayer is an essential element. My pastor's wife gave me "Andrew Murray on Prayer" 4 yrs ago and told me "beginning everyday, pray." I thought, really before work. How? She said, "you'll find time. Get up a little earlier. You'll see." Well. She was right. I find the time to pray. And thru-out the day as well. It is part of me.

Thank you for being honest - I know prayer matters and that God hears our prayers - but I find myself doing what was described in your message. Jumping up to get on with what I perceive needs to be done instead of being still to listen to God's directions. "Be still and know I am God."
Thank you for your encouragement.

Thank you very much for making me aware of this important issue of prayer. I realized I give little time to pray and today I'm going to put into practice the life of prayer as I want to follow in Jesus' footsteps because its my intention to give God the first priority in my life in everything. Thanx very much, may God richly bless you.

Cathe, That was a good lesson to learn. I feel I already do that, but don't allow myself to listen to God talk back to me. I go to the gym every morning and spend around 75 minutes or so on the cardio equipment and use that whole time to pray to God. I go early in the morning when it is the quietest and love it. Thanks for all you do for us.

Great message! Our time is so eaten up by technology, Lord help us! Deliver us from those things that seem so urgent but really aren't. Let our time be spent wisely, and with You. Amen.
So many things vie for our time. The Lord is left out as we rush past Him. I always love the story in My Heart Christ's Home. The Lord had set up a nice place for His child to come and spend time with Him. It wasn't for knowledges sake alone that the Lord desires we read the word, and pray, but also for fellowship with Him. We would never rush past a guest in our home who sat on our couch waiting for us to spend time with them. But we sure do rush past our Lord and run out the door, and say without meaning to, "Later Jesus, I'm busy right now!"
Lord forgive us and have mercy upon us. Help us to slow down and spend time in prayer and the fellowship of Your word and Your wonderful presence. Help us to have You as our highest priority. Amen and Amen.
Thanks Cathe. Great devotion and exhortation.

This summer I am learning to spend more time on prayer.
Yes, we do have the time. I'm blessed to know that past
mess ups can come back for review. That we can take this time
in prayer to release them completely and not to allow them to
resurface. In this new season we must be free of any bondage
in order to take advantage of what's next in God's move. All we
have to do is receive it. Thank you. -May

I have to remember there is always time for prayer. I do well when I go for walks and that's when I feel the spiritual connection, and the prayer starts to flow. But this is encouraging to remind me of how complete I feel when I take that time and that I can always take more time. The more I pray, the better I become at knowing what I should pray for.

Cathe, Thank you for that confirmation! Also, to me that time alone with the Father gives me such peace and it's when I feel His presence the most. I love to think of it as OUR Time! I imagine being a little girl in Daddy's comforting arms.........Thank you

Thank you Cathe. I was so accustomed to getting up at 6:00 am every morning for prayer and the last month I got away from it. I woke up this morning and joined about 13-18 women on the daily prayer line. I felt so refreshed as I know my day is going to be fantastic. We need to talk to our Heavenly Father just as much as we talk to each other on the phones, FB and any other ways of communication.
Thank you again for reminding us that we must pray each and every day. All day long we can be in prayer.

That was great!...I will definitely find more time to pray, I do pray throughout the day and really try to grasp the daily devotionals from Pastor Greg. I really enjoy them. I love reading all the messages from you and Pastor Greg! Thanks to both of you as you have made a tremendous difference in my life. God is Great!

You are so right, pray without ceasing. And I do go to my own little dark bedroom and pray for everything and thank God for everything He is doing in my life and others. God answers prayers. It might not be like what you think, but it will come when God sees fit and the way He does it in His great love.

Bless you, Cathe, I needed that reminder. I know the power of prayer has had such an impact on my life, my family's and we am getting bolder to pray for the needs of others and expect to see God's hand move in their lives. But, it is also so vital to our relationship with our Lord... I beleive being too busy to pray is just another of the enemies tactics to hinder us .... Thank you.

I am going to print this out and put it in my Bible. I find myself rushing to do this or that before I go to work and do this and that after work. What is at the end of the list? Talking with my Heavenly Father and my Savior. God led me to this lesson. Thank you for writing it!

It is so true what you said. The other thing is reading His word. These two areas, I have stated I don't have time. It is true, I can make time. I come home from a long day of work, to my family to handle family chores, and then I get away and rest by watching TV. That's not good. I should wake up a little early and bring my day to God, and speak with Him throughout the day (which I do), but I need to put that one on one time with God and read His word for growth and intimacy and pray, then to wait on our Lord to hear from Him too.
It all requires discipline. I need to discipline myself to be more in the blessings of God, than to be on my own.
Thank you,
Sonia

Thank you Cathe, for that blessed reminder. Prayer is not coming to God with a list, but speaking to God from my heart and believing in faith that He will always provide the solution. I cannot think of any other better way to begin every day.

Thank you so much Cathe for this on Praying..As I seek the Lord more each day, I find myself wanting to pray more and more and then I find after praying for the right things, spiritual things, I am growing up...As I pray for others as well for God's will to be done, I see the Lord working, it may not be right away, but He hears and answers when He knows we are sincere..It is a wonderful privilege to be able to come to the Father in Jesus Name and know He hears and loves us so much to give us first what we have need of and then all these things will be added unto you...and to just be still and quiet and confident is a beautiful thing, just to be in His presence..for the last few weeks He has said to me ""in quietness and confidence will be your strength""...I believe this is for our prayer lives as well...You are such a blessing to all those around you, thank you, God Bless

Thanks Cathe for your honesty.
Many years ago - about 32 years ago to be exact, I was going through a very difficult time at work and at home. It seemed like I never had a minute to myself. I decided one morning to start getting up earlier so that I would have time to myself and to be with God. I started a daily devotional and prayer time for myself, and I still keep that time every morning. What strength the Lord brings to me every day, and His messages of letting me know the tools and prayers that I will need to get through my day each and every day most of the time, are loud and clear, and sometimes very suttle and quiet. I am so thankful that the Lord called me to start my day each and every day with prayer, and I listened to what He wanted for me. Thank you Lord.

I also needed this now. Lately I have been acting as though when making time for prayer I was doing God a favor by rushing, just as you mentioned. Forgive me Lord Jesus. You the King of Kings, the creator and God of all asks that I spend time with You daily? Me? What an honor! Definitely puts everything in perspective.
Great idea Debby to keep it in our Bible and I will definitely make extra copies for friends and family.
Cathe God bless you for your faithfulness!

I praise and thank the Lord for bringing up this important topic with regards to prayer. Please accept my sincere gratitude for bringing this up. It is very important to know that this is one of the prescription given by our Lord, namely: let your hope keep you joyful; be patient in your troubles and Pray al all times.
