The Thankful Tree
Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to come together and show appreciation and thanks to God and to each other for all we have been blessed with. It’s easy to remember to be thankful for the “big” things that happen in our lives: a new car, house, job promotion—the list goes on and on. But what about the awesome “smaller” things that truly bless us and remind us of how much God cares for every small detail of our daily lives? The meal a friend brought over when you were sick, a birthday you celebrated, a new friend you made, or an inspirational book you read—things that really impacted you, but have been long since forgotten in the business of life. Here is a simple way of keeping track of those memories. It will remind you and your family of just how much you have been blessed, and will be a Thanksgiving tradition for years to come!
You will need:
- A tree, either made or purchased (I got mine at a local craft store for $3.00!)
- Tags, with strings attached
- A pen
- A small bucket or basket
- Bows, buttons, or whatever you would like to use to decorate your tree
Throughout the year, keep the bucket or basket handy, in a drawer or cabinet, filled with blank hang tags and a pen. As a blessing comes along, fill out a tag and keep it in the bucket. Get your kids involved! Let them draw pictures of their special blessings. Purchase or make a tree that you can keep on display at Thanksgiving and decorate it if you like. Pick a day around Thanksgiving Day to sit down as a family and pull out your tags. Read them out loud to each other as you place them on your tree. Make it a special time to really thank the Lord for all He has done. Keep the tree out throughout the holiday season, for all to see how much the Lord loves us and cares for our needs. Refill your bucket with blank tags and start again for the next year.

What a wonderful idea! We always go around the Thanksgiving dinner table and share of what we are thankful, but I like that this idea brings the entire year into focus! Fabulous...Blessings

I wish I had done this years ago. How do you tell someone your heart hurts because you never did enough for them? With this craft I could have brought to remembrance, just by reading an answered prayer that they wrote, without having to prod them. I could gently say, "Remember this?" with their tag in my hand. Things I wouldn't ask anyone to bury or think they are not thought of at these tremendous times of need....when prayer is not enough.......ask God.

LOVE THIS. I am going to use this idea for my Women's Ministry at our church. Once a month I will ask the ladies to write down one thing that they are thankful for that month. Then every year during the month of November, we will spend one meeting reading the cards and decorating our "Thanksgiving" Tree for the church to enjoy...

Love It! Yes we will start this tradition. I just happen to have a couple little trees that I picked up at a rummage sale. I believe those little trees were just waiting to be used for this very purpose. Thank you for sharing. It is so true that we remember the big things, but most often forget the many small blessings because we do not write them all down. This is a great way to do that. I will start by being thankful for the internet, so that we can share creative ideas.

This is a wonderful way to bring Thanksgiving to the family. For many years we have gone around the dinner table and said what we are thankful for that year. Now with this new tradition it will be more meaningful to write down our thankfulness and express it with our hearts. May God richly bless you. In His Love, Sharon

I love this idea. On Thanksgiving Day when family arrives we write down on a slip of paper what we are thankful for and then at dinner we pick a slip and read it and everyone guesses who wrote it. I like the tree, it brings it to another level.
