The Mother’s Race
The job description was for Director of Operations, and the requirements went as follows: Standing for hours on end. Unlimited work weeks. No vacations. Must be a skillful negotiator. Degrees in culinary arts, finance, and medicine helpful. Oh, and by the way, there will be no paycheck.
Twenty-four people agreed to be recorded for an Internet video interview, but as the requirements became clearer, there were no takers—not one. The comments made by some of the interviewees were:
- “Is that even legal?”
- “I think that’s a little intense…that’s crazy.”
- “That’s cruel, inhumane.”
- “Nobody’s doing that for free!”
It was a new video for a “fake position” created by the American Greetings card company for Mother’s Day. The job was fake, but the interviews were real. The video is excellent, and when it was posted it went viral.
I watched it online and I laughed out loud. Then I wanted to cry. Because as the website states: “A mom’s impact is endless . . . so is her job description. It may be the world’s toughest job . . . but it provides the most extraordinary joy.”
I agree with that statement. OK, maybe not the part about it being the world’s toughest job. But I do happen to think they are getting pretty close to the mark. Even Jesus used mothers as an example when He looked for an analogy of suffering followed by joy:
“Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world” (John 16:21).
To be a mother is a call to suffer. It’s true.
- A mother suffers when she brings a child into the world.
- A mother suffers when her child gets sick.
- A mother suffers when her child gets hurt.
- A mother suffers when her child goes astray.
- And perhaps hardest of all, a mother suffers when her child dies.
It is a huge responsibility to parent a child. Not just at the beginning of life, but also in the middle, and at the end. Because being a mother never stops.
However, being a godly mother encompasses much, much more than suffering. There is the promise of hopeful, relentless joy in this life and in eternity. Inexpressible, incalculable, eternal joy. We may work like crazy women but we can always rest in the Lord and in His strength.
I want to say to all mothers out there, run this “mother race” with joy. Run with all your heart, mind, and strength. Run for the Lord, who entrusted His children to you. Run for those children, that they may see your love and commitment to them. Run. Run. Run this race like your clothes are on fire! All heaven wants to cheer you on as you look toward the prize of hearing the Lord say, “Well done!” I want to cheer you on too!
But first, to our moms, we say thank you. We want to honor you for the things you’ve done. For the countless things that we selfishly never took notice of.
To those who may not have been our mothers, but who functioned like mothers and taught us by words and godly examples, hats off to you too! You are “mothers in the faith.” You cared, mentored, and prayed for us—to you we say thank you as well.
And to the rest of us moms in the trenches, let’s cast off the weight of comparing ourselves to each other, or to standards that are in vogue for about a minute. Cast off the weight of always having to have a perfect house and homemade bread dough rising on our spotless counters. Chill out about Instagram and reading mommy blogs and Pinterest. If these things help us, great! If they stress us out, frustrate, and whittle away precious time, let them go!
In doing so, we will free up more time and energy for important matters: God, family, and modeling love and holy living. Let’s run this race for the ultimate prize, forget what is behind, cast off the weights, and go for it—because this race is best run when we are fit and fleet.
That makes this mother and grandmother want to turn off the laptop, smartphone, TV, and leap off the couch. We only have this moment, and who knows for how long it will be ours? Carpe diem.
Let’s run together!

I had three children, so I know what you mean. However they are all alive. My daughters are angry at me right now and will have nothing to do with me. My son who is in prison, still loves me. I send him the devotions I get off the internet every week.
I keep praying for my daughters, and leave them up to God. They are out of my hands and life, but God is so loving. I am not going to take them back from God.
Sincerely Cynthia Sancho

Happy Mothers Day, Cathe! When I get your blog in my email, I know it will be rewarding. Being a Mom is a tough job; but worth it all. My children are grown and I have 2 Grandchildren. Sometimes I wish that I could go back and change things. Be a better Mom. But; like you wrote, we have to move on in the race.
Praise the Lord!
Sending a big "Mom" hug to you.

it makes me very sad because I gave custody of my son to his aunt because I was on drugs. But I keep praying that one day if I do God's will, I could be a part of his life. My mom passed away and I miss her. I hope that everyone has a great Mother's Day. God bless you all. I love my church and thanks Cathe:)

To the lady who gave custody of her son to a relative, I say God be with you dear. He will honor your sacrifice and give you peace in knowing you did what seemed to be the best for your son and for your family. I have worked in the judicial system for many years and have had 56 foster children in my home, so I know what you are suffering through. God loves you and I do too.

Aww, but being a mom, it's best job in the world, I wouldn't have traded a moment of it, and young moms don't complain about it, they grow up way to fast!

Happy Mother's Day Cathe, I wish I would have know someone when I was raising my children. My walk with the LORD was not so good. Sometimes I was for HIM and sometimes I was against HIM. Needless to say my children were the ones who suffered the most. I to have a son who does not talk to me and he has 3 children who I never see. My daughter has 3 children, but because of the mistakes she has made, see only sees 1 of them, and this child of hers has 3 children of his own. I am so blessed to have this beautiful family and I know one of these days GOD is going to heal all of the fractures and we will be made whole. I made so many mistake and these mistakes have been passed down 2 generations. My prayer is that I will abide in GOD and HE in me, and my family will see HIM through me, and will come to know HIM as their LORD and SAVOR. Thank you for your words of wisdom. GOD Bless you.

As I lay here in my bed early in the morning I came upon your morning email and have read some of the comments. I feel so blessed to be among a diverse group of Christian Sisters. My heart is filled with love and empathy to many of their comments. I too was so blessed to be a mother of eight children and 3 grandsons. I want to be able to set a GODLY example and leave a legacy for them to seek GOD first in all things. I pray for continual guidance in my life that my focus will only be on HIM!! Cathe, have a beautiful Mothers Day!!

Seven years ago on Mother's day, my 6 year old lay in bed, dying, from leukemia. I was feeling so overwhelmed & tired. I snuck away for 1 hour to be with the LORD to refill me with HIS strength. Upon returning, my precious daughter asked, "Mom, why are you always leaving me?" I replied, "I'm not, this is the only time I left, for one hour." I climbed back into bed with her. She passed away the following Saturday. I was grateful GOD let us have that Mother's Day, yet, feel bad for leaving even for that one hour. If my daughter were still alive, I would do ANYTHING to be with her, not taking even one hour for granted. May GOD bless all those Moms fighting alongside their child who has cancer or any disease and give you strength and peace. Also, a special thank you and Happy Mother's Day to those Moms in our military who are sacrificing being away from their children, for all of our freedom, so we may celebrate this day! Semper Fidelis!

Cathe, you and Greg are a major blessing in my daily life!!! Television with rotten / negative/ news was truly getting under my skin. So, I (months ago) canceled my Comcast cable. Now, I am very much blessed, excited by, and learning from your programs (here and on radio)!!!
Both my 21 and 24 year old grandsons make time to find Greg on the "tube' and radio - Yeah!!!
Praise God for each of you'

Happy Belated Mother's Day Cathe and thank you for sharing this Mother example. I have six children of which three were adopted to their other families which leaves three with me. An adult Daughter and two Sons. Though I have been praying for all my children, I've experienced when a child goes astray. One of my two Sons who are with me, the older one - decided to just go on his own and enjoy life as it goes. I scold him at times, I say harsh words to him at times but then God calmed my heart and I started praying for him. I read the Bible and cried most times but I continue to pray. I shared my situation w/other Bible study sisters to also pray for my astray Son. Thankfully he stopped what he was doing but it was too late has he had had a daughter from the relationship he was in. He didn't marry the Mother and I'm still praying for him and the daughter as well as the Mom. He's now in the States (Seattle) working and hoping to go back to school.
I understand how hard a Mom's work is.
