Get creative and have some fun this Christmas. Create your own stockings! This was the very first sewing project I conquered…

Needed Materials:

  • 1 yard each of your favorite Christmas fabrics
  • Any trim or embellishments you might like to fancy up your stocking
  • A large piece of craft paper for drawing your stocking pattern (Really, any kind of paper will do, even newspaper!)

Instructions

  1. Take the craft paper and cut out the shape and size of the stocking you would like to make.
  2. Take two pieces of fabric with the right sides facing each other. This will be the body of your stocking.
  3. Pin the pattern you made to the wrong side of the fabric.
  4. Cut out your stocking.
  5. Cut out the top ruffle (approximately 1 yard long and 6 inches wide)
  6. Cut out a small  rectangular piece of cloth for the hanger. I cut mine about 3″ x 8″.
  7. If you would like to embellish the stocking with polka dots or any other shapes, cut them out in whatever sizes you want, and pin them on the right side of the stocking. You can either use the applique stitch on your sewing machine or just sew them on by hand.
  8. Pin both right sides of the fabric for the stocking together.
  9. Sew the stocking around all the edges, leaving the top open, and then turn it right side out.
  10. Fold the ruffle in half with the right side of fabric on the outside. Fold the bottom (open edge) up 1/2″ and press down. Stitch a hem to hide the raw edge.
  11. Pin the open end of the stocking to the fabric, and ruffle it as you go. You can do a fan fold every 1/2″ or so to give it a more ruffled effect.
  12. Sew the ruffle onto the outside of the stocking, and then sew the open end of the ruffle shut.
  13. Flip the ruffle up and sew the hanger onto the open end of the stocking.
  14. Now fill the stocking with all the goodies you can find!
