Okay, girls, so this isn’t low-fat or low-carb, but it is really delicious. On certain special occasions you just have to treat your loved ones (and yourself!) to something this scrumptious! This is one of those side dishes I could eat all by itself! This recipe serves two.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 4 fresh sage leaves
  • 1 lb. Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Grease a 9″ round or oval baking pan with 1 tsp. of the butter.
  2. Melt the remaining butter in a medium saucepan.  Add the olive oil and the garlic and sage and saute for 1 to 2 minutes.  The garlic should be soft, but not browned.
  3. Carefully place a layer of potatoes in the baking pan.  Top potatoes with a few pieces of garlic and 1 1/3 of the sage leaves.  Sprinkle one-third of the Gruyere and Parmesan cheeses over the garlic-sage layer.  Repeat this procedure two more times.
  4. In a small bowl, dissolve the flour in the milk.  Pour the milk mixture evenly over the top of the gratin and season with salt and pepper.  Bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
