Pie in a Jar
When I saw this recipe, I thought it would be so fun to use for a bridal shower, special birthday, or Bible study potluck. It was fun and easy to do and can be adapted with different pie fillings and garnishes. I had the idea of apple pie filling for fall, cherry pie filling for Christmas or Valentine’s Day, lemon for Easter, and blueberry for the Fourth of July. How fun!
Ingredients:
- 2 pie crusts—Use store-bought or your favorite pie crust recipe
- 2 cans (12 oz.) of cherry pie filling (or your favorite flavor of filling)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp sugar
Supplies:
- Six 4-ounce mason jars or four 8-ounce mason jars
- If for give-away or parties, you can use labels or gift tags, ribbon or raffia
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Press the dough, bit by bit, into the jars a little at a time (not too thick!) until the jars are lined with the dough up to the rims. Reserve some dough for toppers. Next, fill jars nearly to the top with your pie filling of choice.
- Set the filled jars on a sturdy cookie sheet and place into oven. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until dough becomes a light golden color.
- Roll out reserved dough to about 1/8-inch thick and cut out 6–8 hearts. Brush the hearts with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar. Arrange the dough hearts on the pies. Bake an additional 10–15 minutes until dough is golden brown all the way around the jars.
- Remove and let jars cool on a rack. Decorate with ribbon, tags, or labels on lids as desired and give to your family, friends, or guests!
