Packing a Suitcase
As I was getting ready to pack for a trip, I thought a fun thing to do might be to show you all what I do when I go through the process. We put together this video to do just that. Please share your favorite packing tips in the comments!

Great video. We are planning a trip too! I was just wondering how many days you are going and how many outfits you are taking for your trip? I hate to over pack too...
I love putting outfits together and less is more...much better solution.
That was very helpful how you used the plastic on the bottle in case it spilled--that was very clever! I never thought about the cleaners plastic bags either.
Thank you for all your suggestions i will incorporate some of your great ideas....

Thanks, Cathie! Just one question. What size is that suitcase and what brand? I need a new one and it looks perfect!

I travel a lot for work and there were some great ideas such as the dry cleaner bags and the shoe bags. I love the plastic wrap too. I have had bottles explode before. I roll everything I can as well, and stuff my socks into my shoes to make just that much more room.

Great tips, Cathe. I hang my clothes on hangars in the suitcase, but not with the plastic bags...but now I will : ) I also used to put my little things on top, but I see that the bottom is a much better place for them. Thanks bunches for this video.

Love the dry cleaner bags idea. So helpful.
My tip: travel with a bigger comfortable purse (hold all you need and a little more) but pack a small cross body purse for days when all you really need is your wallet, lip gloss and your powder.

So Helpful!
Basic colors with bright fun jewelry! Love it!
I also like to take a cloth/plastic laundry bag for soiled clothing.

Good job! I never have used the hangers or plastic bags...I like it. Whenever I take any trip, long or short, I always pick a color to coordinate my clothes. Black, brown, or blue, and of course, jeans. From my experience, if the weatherman says "hot" I always back a long sleeve jacket to throw on over my tops, and sleeveless top and shorts if the weatherman says "cold." How do the weather people keep their jobs? Cathe, you did a great job.....Can't wait until my next trip when I will be so well prepared.

Hi Cathe - thank you for that video! I'm starting to travel more and seem to over or under pack. I'm curious too - do you have to check that bag or is it a carry-on? Thanks!

Great tips Cathe.....I do the rolling "thing" and plastic bags too, but always place my shoes on the end of the suitcase - the bottom when it is standing/rolling. That way there is never anything under them so nothing is crushed by their weight. FYI - if your bag is a 21" carry-on DO NOT pack your folding hot pink cosmetic bag - it will not make it through security. I suggest putting it on the top and pulling it out for inspection. I packed much this way for a month in Europe and only needed a carry-on and tote bag. Your ideas work.

Love the video Cathe!
Here is a funny tip my mom and I discovered when I was about 9. My dad, mom, brother and I went to Portugal and we each had our own suitcase. Well of course MY suitcase was lost and it went to Spain for 8 of the 10 days of our trip. So there I was wearing a shirt and tank top and nothing else to put on. We were staying in a small town and there weren't clothing stores to go shopping in unless I wanted to wear the traditional 7 layer skirt. Thankfully my mom is 4'11" so I could make some of her clothes work, but I wasn't too happy about it. So after that adventure my mom split up our clothes into more than one suitcase.

Thanks Cathe! Great ideas......thought of using hangers but never
the plastic bags too. Your favorite item....the folding carryall for the
must needed things........I love mine too. But I always fold mine and zip it up.
It is always so big but using unfolded like you did seems like it takes so much less space. I
am going to try it that way next time. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing this video. It does make sense to roll out our clothes. I do that and also put any liquids in plastic baggies. You have got some good ideas. Thanks again. I will be going away in October with the senior center here in Simi Valley, CA to Hawaii on a cruise. It is my first cruise too. Well God Bless you Cathe and your husband also. I love your husband's devotionals that he sends to me every day. I am so glad to hear the Harvest went very well. God is good.

You are so cute! Thanks for sharing! I love the sweet softness the Lord has given you, without the shy-ness.
I tend to be overly shy and bashful. It blesses me to know I can still be on the quiet side, but still able to share on video...I will pray for that boldness as I passed up the chance to be video taped for my Harvest testimony. Thanks for being you! :)

Thanks for this video. I learned so many new tricks! I also think I found another quick sewing project for shoe bags since I don't have any of those ;).
I would love a house tour Cathe! I would love to see how you organize around your home :). I hope that's not a weird request. I'm a young mom of 2 and even though I have been married 7 years there is still so much I feel I can learn from you:) God bless and Thanks!

Great video; however, unless it's a carry-on, I would suggest packing a change of clothes, underwear, and toiletries in your carry-on.

I LOVE to travel and always like to pick up packing tips so thank you for the video. I like to purchase some clothing or accessories from my travels like you do so I have used Eagle Creek Pack-It compression sacs for years. I purchased them 7 years ago and they are still in perfect condition. They can take 12 inches of clothing and compress to 2 inches. If you are careful when you insert in to the bag and your clothes are pressed very little if no wrinkling occurs. I throw one empty compression bag in my suitcase for my travel treasures just to make sure I have room on my way home. Happy travels Cathe.

That was a wonderful demonstration!! I always always bring too much stuff and end up not wearing most of the clothes I bring and have no room for anything extra to bring back home. This would be a wonderful tool to use on the create section for the projects.

Your idea of packing your main clothing items on hangers is a great idea so that when you are able to unpack at your destination(s) they are ready to hang up and the rest of your items are accessible in their "drawer" (suitcase.) I had never seen the leak-proof idea of using plastic-wrap but I can't wait to travel again to try that one out. I'm going to save this video in my email account waiting for that next trip. Thanks, Cathe!

My husband and I travel a lot, especially now that we are retired. I pretty much pack like you do Cathe, except your input on the dry cleaning bags on the hangers, what a great idea for that. Thirty years ago it wasn't like that, we used to go on skiing trips and one time I packed 9 bags of ski clothes. I laugh at that now. Thank you Cathe for all you do. You and Greg both are such a blessing.

I love your travel tip about packing basic items then adding accessories (scarves, jewelry, etc.) to stretch your wardrobe without adding a lot of items. I am the worst packer as far as overpacking. My suitcase is packed to the gills and becomes such a burden to me, it has almost ruined trips for my husband and me. Also, I have found that instead of being paranoid about running out of a toiletry or needing some OTC medication or first aid item, I try to remember that short of going on an African safari or to a deserted area of the Arctic circle, there is usually a drug store nearby and since we always rent a car, getting something that we may need is not a big deal. I do use the dry cleaner bags for packing things that I don't want to wrinkle badly, but I've never left the items on hangers. I will definitely do that. I will challenge myself to simplify my packing the next time I have the opportunity to travel. Thanks for such a fun video and topic!

Love the idea of rolling the scarves and workout gear and putting the shoes in separate bags. I feel like that also helps when you are ready to come home, keeping the shoes away from the clothes you might have skipped on wearing on your trip. :) Thanks for sharing!

Hi- love the packing tips! I travel for work over seas, and have learned the hard way that less is more. I learned a great tip from a colleague how to wash and dry clothing quickly in the hotel sink: pack a small 2 oz bottle of detergent/woolite with your toiletries; when you need to wash out clothes, use that detergent in sink or tub, wash clothes, wring them out as best you can, then lay each piece flat, one at a time, on a towel. Then roll the towel up tightly, and swing it around in a circle in front of you, with hands holding either end of the towel, until the water gets blotted out on the towel. Then hang clothing to dry completely. This swinging uses centrifugal force to get the water out, and clothes dry very quickly afterward. I wash and dry shirts, workout clothes,(like Cathe, I only bring one set, and wash it every day), lingerie, even jeans. You can pack VERY lightly even for a long trip, if you just do a little wash every day.
