Like a Girl
When did doing something “like a girl” become an insult?
Thousands of years before the women’s liberation movement, or anyone ever heard of Gloria Steinem, the ancient biblical stories in Scripture never stereotyped or portrayed women as weak. Yes, we know that the average woman is weaker physically than men, but they are not weaker spiritually, mentally, or emotionally. Think of Deborah, Jael, Esther, or Ruth. Think of Mary (any one of the Marys will do), Martha, Priscilla, or Philip’s four daughters.
This past year, the highest rated commercial shown during the Super Bowl wasn’t one by Go-Daddy or Budweiser. It was a commercial that asked the question, “What would it look like to do something ‘like a girl’?” Several young people were filmed doing the first thing that came to mind when asked to “run like a girl, throw like a girl, fight like a girl.” It wasn’t too surprising when they jogged daintily in place, or flailed their bent wrists in a lame fight, or awkwardly flung their arm to throw an imaginary ball. All of them deliberately looked silly, weak, distracted.
Look at the heroic women in Scripture—their examples of integrity, bravery, and wit. Read the gripping story in Exodus of Moses’ mother, Jochebed; his sister, Miriam; and the Jewish midwives Shiphrah and Puah (their names forever recorded for us to honor).
Exodus 1:17 tells us that because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They were women who would stand to defy the commands of Pharaoh of Egypt and save a son, who would rescue a nation, which would bring us our Messiah, who would save the world. Because they feared God, they were strong mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.
It is worth noting that Pharaoh’s decree was, “If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live” (Exodus 1:16 NLT). In his eyes, letting every daughter live would never be a threat to his kingdom. He had no concept of female bravery or empathy. Little did he know that to fight like a girl, stand like a girl, think like a girl, would be the beginning of the undoing of the might of his Egypt.
To fight the good fight and run the race set before us—whether we are in the kitchen, in the classroom, in the boardroom, in the courtroom, or in the mission field—means we are not insignificant, nor an afterthought in the mind of God. My dear sisters, mothers, and daughters: Pharaoh may have misjudged women, but let’s not misjudge ourselves.
Let every daughter live, and run, and fight, and love, and live like the girl God made you to be! Don’t think the Bible is about men, for men, while women stand by in cute outfits and cheer. It is about women as well, and the part we have to play in this great unfolding drama.
These words from the great apostle Paul were written to Timothy, a young man who first learned the Scriptures—not at his father’s knee, but on the lap of his mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7–8).
Remember, Israel’s first deliverer was not a man in flowing robes and a long beard. It was a slave woman, a mother named Jochebed, in average clothing, shedding tears, and showing miraculous courage.
Today, the world, the church, and the family need the influence of women who will fear and obey God above all.

Thank you Cathe! This is an amazing word of the Lord. I love being a girl. Yes, we are stereotyped, but God has blessed us with things that Men will never have. Like childbirth. What an amazing gift He has given us. Us, women.
Wow! A timely word from God in a time we need to stand for Him.
Blessings.

YAY! Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thank you Cathe. Thank you for your beautiful faith that is an example of how to be a Godly woman, who is strong, confident and capable. I appreciate all your beautiful posts. I know that God truly blessed Greg and your family with you. And Greg is quick to point that out every morning! lololol!
My daughter lost her son. I lost my grandson and a piece of my daughter. Your grace is a constant reminder that we are not alone in our grief. We both so appreciate the sharing of yours and Greg's heartache and comfort in your faith. Somehow, knowing there are others that "get it" in the faith... well... I am sure you know what I mean.
Thank you again, for sharing your faith and hope.
God Bless you and your beautiful family.
Kathi :-)

I am so sorry for your loss. Truly. I cannot express how deep my grief is for you and your daughter. Every loss and grieving experience is different, for sure... I lost my young husband of 20 years just 9 months ago. Sad, difficult, a tragedy for all of those/us who miss him. However, God is on the throne! You are not alone. I pray You and your daughter will receive his beauty for ashes, his oil of joy for mourning, his garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that you might be trees of righteousness, planted by His word , that He might be glorified!
Praying for you and your loved ones Sister. Thank you for sharing !

Great point! Just had this conversation with my boyfriend who I'm having to train him on how to date a girl! Men are not used to dating women who act like, speak like, and live like a woman, girl, Child of God! He loves it and said that he hadn't dated a women like that EVER! ... And we are both in our 40's! We need more girls/women of Faith to teach and train both men and women respect the way God made us and the laws He has set for us! Thank you for writing... It's very refreshing to see.

Hi Cathe, how are you doing? Thank you for sending and mentioning let every daughter live and run and fight and live like the girl God made us to be! That is great! I have a daughter and two granddaughters. I love them so much! I always tell them about My Jesus, always! My daughter has slipped away, but I keep praying. There is a song by Mendusa, it's about Ester and it goes sometime you have to go uninvited. It's talking about going and to be strong. I thank My Jesus that He made me strong, life is hard. I have four grandsons and I tell them to respect women and be Godly men. They are still young, but hope to instill in their hearts. My granddaughters are precious little ladies :0)
Thank you, God's Blessings!

Wow! Spot on Cathe! I felt how every word must've flowed so easily for you when we are passionate about writing something. Praise God for this encouraging article and how we as Women are very significant. My Husband always tells me when he reads Proverbs that the word Wisdom refers to as a "she" which is an intangible quality of a Godly woman and then he thanks me for many decisions that I've made for us because I seek God first. May God be glorified for all he uses us for ☺

We need to teach our young girls this at an early age, and reach our teen girls. We're a lot more than sugar and spice and everything nice. We have the same power of God in us as our male counterparts! Thanks Cathe xo

I was just reading the other day in a golf magazine that the president of the PGA was fired for tweeting that another golfer was doing it like a girl, or something to that effect. Thank you for the wonderful reminder that women are not of lesser anything than men. You pointed out some wonderful women in the Bible whom God used in a mighty way. We are all here on this earth to be used by God in order to glorify Him.

I loved this! I feel so blessed that my husband and I are getting the privilege of raising two girls. God made them so unique and special and since we know they are made in His image I LOVE watching them "throw like a girl", "run like a girl", "scream and laugh and love like a girl." It's very exciting!

My small group just completed our study of Extraordinary Women of the Bible. It featured 12 women such as Eve, Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary and Martha, Samaritan woman, Anna, Lydia, Ruth and Naomi, etc. It was a wonderful study that even the men in our group enjoyed and learned from. These women were all incredible women of faith and evangelism and love of God and Jesus.

Thanks for writing in truth. We know who we are as women. I am confident, but I get so discouraged when I see "those ads' or when I hear comments that I need to do more with my life..... a stay-at home mum is not enough. I should be seeking MORE. But I can never get the real deep down meaning of what that 'more' is as compared to my life. I don't have girls. I have 3 boys. But I am praying for the partners God brings into their lives and all girls and women. Thank you for speaking out. I love reading your columns.

Be of good Courage the Lord says! We have to be careful not to let society govern our self worth. Men and women are both uniquely talented with many gifts to offer. We are made to glorify God. Whether we are dainty or tom boyish or both? Its ok, because God loves us no matter what and he judges the heart.

Thanks for uplifting these great women.
I have written a book about "nameless" women in the OT and NT who have stood for faith and strength -- and some who ignored the love and commands of God. Still unpublished, but it includes a part where I jump into the head of each woman - What an insight to be HER, to think and worship like HER!
Bravo to these named and un-named women of God's story.

I am so happy to read this. I am co-teaching children's church and I just talked about Ruth and Naomi last week. The boys weren't too sure about the story because there wasn't any fighting going on in the story. Until I let them know of the lineage of David and without strong women in the Bible we wouldn't have some other of the more "famous" men or fights. I love it. Thank you and I always worship like a girl!!! :-)

Thank you Cathe Laurie! That is a powerful message that resounds in my spirit! I fully understand and accept God's Divine order in the family and know full well that my husband is the head of our family, the priest, if you will, while Christ is the Head of the church!
Quick story. When we first became Pastors, a seasoned sister in Christ who co-Pastored with her husband made a statement that I never forgot (you would have to understand my Polynesian culture as well) - but she said, "If your husband dies, you (me the wife) are nothing!" Talk about being blind-sided and so discouraged!
As we drove away, I shared what she said with my husband and said, "I do not receive what she said, because my significance does not come from being a Pastor's wife -- my significance comes from being a Daughter of the King! So Thank you for this inspiring - encouraging word!!! I receive it in the matchless Name of Jesus!!! Thank God for you & your hubby Greg! Such a blessing to the Body of Christ!

Thank you... I just came across this site today and this was very much needed for me. Though I never cared what others thought of me, I realize I think very little of myself because I am not doing something huge and important. My mother & sisters in the Lord say that I am worth so much to them, but I suppose I never see how I am worth something special to our Father. I suppose I have always felt lesser than due to the world's view and never realized it. I am one among many who appreciate you sharing & allowing the Lord to use you :)
