Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room
I don’t like to move. In the 37 years of my married life, we have only owned three houses. I have heard it said that in women’s dreams, houses are symbolic of their lives. It is true in my case. A nightmare, for me, is dreaming my house is falling apart, stairs collapsing from dry rot, and alligators swimming in the bathtub!
Our first home was a Victorian farmhouse, complete with claw foot tub and bedrooms with dormer ceilings. I had to battle the constant threat of termites and leaky ceilings, but I loved each room. I had a sun room, a sewing room, a front porch, and a detached garage, which we enclosed for Greg to have a quiet place to study.
In our current home, we have one “spare” room. Originally, it was Jonathan’s, when we moved here 12 years ago. It was filled with Star Wars figures, video games, surfboards, and skateboards. Then, when Christopher moved out on his own and Jonathan moved into his old room (a bit further down the hall from ours) it became our guest room. It was tidy, minimal. No more toys. Instead we had a comfy queen-size bed with fluffy pillows, an end table, and a reading lamp. Today, the room is taken over by four little girls. Greg has stocked it with doll houses, fairy castles, a child-size table and chairs, and a miniature pink kitchen complete with sink, oven, and refrigerator. The closet is full of fancy pink dresses, Disney princesses, costume jewelry, and too many baby dolls to count. So much for minimalism!
I love how each phase of life has dictated the use of this room: a small boy’s room, a restful guest room, and now a play room for four little girls. In each phase, the room has spoken volumes about its purpose and the people who occupied it.
I wonder about the rooms in my heart. I wonder about the room in the center of my heart. Is there a room you have prepared for Jesus? A place of honor reserved only for Him, with nothing to crowd or clutter?
What makes it His? It is full of His words. It rings with Scripture. The sound of His voice echoes down the hallways of my heart: comforting, correcting, exhorting.
It is full of His love and the things He loves: whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good report. There you will find virtue; there you find praise.
It is a room that will be filled with the fragrance of His love, joy, and peace.
Will you prepare Him room in your heart today? The 17th-century hymn puts it so beautifully:
“Then cleansed by every Christian breast
And furnished for so great a Guest.
Yea, let us each our hearts prepare
For Christ to come and enter there.”
Maybe you have allowed lesser things to clutter what belongs to Him. All the decorating, parties, shopping, can never replace the true meaning of Christmas this holiday season. Will you allow the Holy Spirit to examine and cleanse your heart of anything or anyone you’ve allowed to crowd the Lord Jesus from His rightful place? Or sadly, will you, like the innkeeper in Bethlehem, hang a sign that says, “No vacancy for You, King of Glory”?

I so relate to this post. I too, have a room that changes with the seasons of my life. My son's room, my sewing room, a room filled with toys and a bed for the grandchildren. It currently is a multi-purpose office, sewing and space for the growing grandchildren, and soon to change into a room for my ill and aging mother. It helps me to realize that through all the changes of my life, as that room changes, I need to remember to keep the light on in the room of my heart for Jesus. For Him who is never changing and all knowing. Thank you for you insight, it touched my heart.
Merry Christmas!

Beautifully said. This year the song, Joy to The World has been on my heart and mind. I have heard the song and sang it before, but this year I just keep thinking about the words "let every heart prepare him room"- it's like a new song to me. Last year in February I gave my heart to the Lord. The Christmas season has become all new to my family and me, and we truly celebrate the reason for the season. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Cathe. I needed to hear these words today. I, too, use to dream of houses. There would be HUGE bedrooms that were maybe 3 or 4 stories up and I would be afraid to climb those stairs, remembering that there was something in those rooms that was scary or evil. I remember one dream in particular that my baby daughter was LIVING in that scary room and I would force myself to walk up those stairs to get her and bring her downstairs. The scary thing was, I forgot she was up there! One night, I dreamed the same dream and the Lord lead me thru those scary rooms and when we got there, it wasn't scary at all, but peaceful and beautiful. I got the feeling that every room in my house could be this way if He leads into them. I knew in waking, the Lord loved me and He gave me incredible peace. I've never had those dreams again!
Thank you for your meditations.
Praise the Lord Jesus!

This is so wonderful Cathe. Thank you for sharing. Too many times have I forgotten the true meaning of the season and too many times have I been caught up with the whirlwind of today's mindset on what Christmas is all about. Thank you for bringing me to the core of what it is all meant to be. Many, many blessings to you, Greg, and the rest of your beautiful family!

How very touched am I by reading this story/message, Cathe.
As I read this story, I was visualizing the moments that each of your family members spent and spend in this very SPECIAL ROOM. I feel as though I was right there in the room. I am so moved.
Thank you for taking me with you down memory lane.
I lost my job in Oct. of 2011 and find it so hard to put God first. I get so distracted by the need to find a job.
I found it hard to find hope at finding a new job, but then I read your story.
I need to remove the clutter that is taking up God's place in my heart (GOD's ROOM). I know when I do this, my heart will overflow with strength and my fears will be pushed aside until there is no room for all the fear inside me. I will be able to focus on Him so much better. How selfish of me to clutter His room with my worries. I should be placing my concerns at His feet so that I can focus on filling His room with my love for Him.

Beautifully put Cathe. I love your words. I know my son's room went from a fun dinosour filled room to a dangerously sin filled room. This went on through High School. He went through some very difficult times and as his parents we were so sad and worried. You know a mother's heart - I would pray over him as he slept or stand outside his door and call out for God's help. I asked God to cleanse his heart and mind of the darkness (Satan) that was overpowering his life. God heard my prayers and now our son is on his own. He called out to God (through Greg's teaching), and he was restored to that loving son that we once knew. His old room has now become a beautiful haven for my Husband's office. It now displays pictures and items that show the successful man that our son has become. The signs of bondage to sin are replaced with blessings and happiness that only the Lord can bring. That room is so happy for us - filled with our Lord God!
God is so AWESOME

Cathe,
I was in an auto accident last evening - car was totaled but the other driver and I are OK - and I realized that the car does not matter - That no one was hurt is what's important -- I got home and opened the Bible and thanked Jesus. Thanked Him. I will get another car, but I will never have another life on the Earth. We all learn what to value. For me it is not about the material possessions I have. I have been seeing life in a whole new way for awhile now, but last evening really brought it home.

I really enjoyed reading this post. It's funny, because I really enjoy using all the rooms in my house, but I haven't spent very much time preparing enough room for Jesus in my heart lately. Thank you for the gentle reminder :) :) Have a great day. Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

What a beautiful post Cathe. I am a Christian, yet a recovering addict. My family have been a part of your Harvest family for over 20 years. I went through and completed a Christian program, have known the Lord my entire life, but somewhere I got lost. My family has rejected me. Not one of them reached out in an effort to do what God commands, yet if I had the means would have for them. I love Jesus. I seek him everyday every hour and your post encouraged me. Thank you

For the past 20+ years I've hosted Christmas at my home; this year I'm going to my sister's instead. I feel so relieved. The pressure is lifted off my shoulders of cleaning the house, decorating, having gifts for every single person, preparing the menu and even planning games and prizes! For once, I can earnestly say I welcome Christmas morning for all it truly is .. the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! I think it's a good thing I'm changing up our tradition. I think God wants me to refocus on Him and what He's done for me. While doing this, I'm also thinking more of others, and how I can be a blessing to them! Use me Lord to be your servant at this Christmas time!

Dear Cathe-
Yes, I agree with you that houses we live in represent seasons in our lives. In the same way, I think that our hearts also have seasons. Each season has both good and bad attributes, but I have learned that it is best to just be content in the season which the Lord has us in. May your Christmas be filled with God's love as you are surrounded by your precious family.

Thank you Cathe, I just saw a LeSEA tag on a car here (Tulsa) and wondered who it might be. Isn't Christmas a wonderful time!?! Maybe it's just the way I feel, but eveyone seems happier and kinder. We are still hoping for our next home, but the years keep ticking away and one of our 5 has left home already. Still, in His time. A very merry and blessed (see K Copeland message) Christmas to you all! MARANATHA

I know the Lord cares deeply for each of you and I'm sure this time of the year is especially hard without your son Christopher in your home to share it with you. Praying the Lord comforts, encourages and uplifts you in a very special way this Christmas. Grace & Peace to you.

Cathe,
I love the things you share with us here, and at church in study. I too have a couple of spare rooms.. and sadly no one to fill them.. oh don't get me wrong I'm blessed to the Core. I just have this habit of cluttering my heart with the past and that past clutters, (I just can't get used to the empty nest thing.) This little tidbit is great . I so do not want anything to clutter up the gems that Jesus has for me. Thank you for your wonderful illustrations. I just Love hearing how you and Pastor Greg are enjoying your granddaughters.. especially cause you guys did not have a daughter of your own with just raising boys... It blesses me so.. I have a daughter who is in her second year in college. She used to have her room Filled to the Core with all that girly girl stuff. My husband and boys had plenty a tea party with her... Thank you for sharing..
HAVE a Beautiful and Blessed Christmas...
In Christ, Pati

Hi Cathe,
Thank you for the reminder. Your words just feel like home. I come from Poland, a country which suffered from opression so much. We didn't have many objects, toys, clothes, etc... I actually remember the time when we walked into a grocery store and there was only salt and vinegar on the shelves. Somehow my mother made it work, so I don't remember any bad feelings or even that I was ever hungry. I remember waking up at 3 am to get a spot in the line to the butchers' which was opening at 9 am, just to be first to get some meat. I remember how proud I was to go and help my mother. It was actually fun. I think I was happy because I always had hope because I walked in the streets where we had at least one church. I could feel the message the priests in those churches were giving us during Sunday mass because my mom made life fun and there was love and laughter. There was room for spiritual awareness and feelings. People didn't have much and their hearts weren't cluttered.

Jolanta,
Thank you for sharing your mother with us.
She is an inspiraton and an encouraging example of the kind of mother I would like to be for my precious daughter to give her
A heart to love and be joyfully thankful for all the Lord does have for us.
Please pray for us as I do struggle with not burdening her with all my worries.

Cathe, Thank you once again for your words of wisdom. As women we need encouraging words from one another.
I had to smile inside as I read your message. I always thought I wanted an older Victorian home, but I am so thankful I have never had to deal with termites or dry rot. On another note, we too have that spare room that as gone from a child's bedroom, to a guest room, and now have grand daughters as well.
May the Lord continue to bless you and your family always.

Hi Cathe,
As a house husband for the next 4 months, your article is helping me keep my sanity as I do a thorough clean/paint of the house and I mean a thorough clean. My friend encouraged me to press on when he told me about his Navy experience when they had to iron their bed during their early morning drills-men were crying and housework can do that to a bloke. Appreciate what women have to do for our families. Patrick

me Christ is the most important guest of our hearts, and that we are here only but temporarily, for He is preparing a place for those who love Him. Love you.

My husband and I are actually in the process of losing our home, the home we used to help give my siblings a safe haven when our mother passed away suddenly. A home that allowed us much enjoyment and laughs, as well as sadness and pain. I think that I have realized that this "house" means nothing without the House of GOD in your heart and soul! I have at times felt very empty, sad and angry, but I know that God has a better plan for us, better than ths home could ever give.
I really appreciate this message and I will make sure that my house is the best it can be for my Lord!
Thanks
