This is fun and easy, and kids love to help. I like to mash the apples by hand; it gives it a coarser texture, and I sprinkle some cinnamon on top.

Ingredients:

  • 12 apples (McIntosh)
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon finely ground sea salt
  • 1/2 cup honey

Directions:

  1. Heat oven 425 degrees F.
  2. Quarter and core the apples.
  3. Peel and cut into 1-inch slices.
  4. In a large oven-proof saute pan, melt butter over the stove. When it starts to brown, add apple slices.
  5. Add salt. Saute until it begins to color; then add the honey.
  6. Stir to mix well.
  7. Put in oven and bake until soft and caramelized—about 20–30 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and mash, or use a food processor.
  9. Serve warm or cold.
