Have you seen the movie Eat Pray Love?

It has the great glossy landscapes of a Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Italy, India, and Bali look oh-so-splendid. So does Julia Roberts—eating, cycling, laughing.

But it is the message of the movie, wrapped in such self-absorbed spiritual jargon, that disturbs me. To quote the main character as an example: “God dwells with me, as me.”

The story, in a nutshell, tells us about a modern woman who finds happiness by figuring out what God wants from her and acting accordingly—sounds good. In the 2 hours and 13 minutes of Eat Pray Love, we follow her travels as she discovers what God supposedly wants and what she must do.

But, here is the real unvarnished story: She leaves her husband for selfish reasons, takes up with a younger attractive man, then discards him, and while traveling in India, she discovers a religion that tells her she can forgive herself. Lavishing herself with such “forgiveness,” she is off to Indonesia, only to fall in love with yet another guy—huh!

All I can say, girls, is: save your money. Instead, buy a travel magazine and enjoy a gelato. At least the pictures in Conde Nast Traveler will be real ones.
