For a creative Christmas (or really anytime) gift this year, I’ve been making fabric-covered hangers, inspired by scraps of fabric laying around that I can’t bear to throw away. This way, you get to use up small bits of fabric you have left over, while turning an otherwise plain closet of wire hangers into something really special.

Wire dry cleaning hangers work wonderfully here! Even though wire hangers get a bad rap, they can be pretty useful around the house. These look especially nice in a coat closet where guests might hang something. Plus, when covered in fabric, clothes can actually stay put on them.

I have packaged them in coordinating groups for gifts that anyone can appreciate. What’s not to love?

Needed materials:

  • Wire hanger
  • Fabric measuring at least 14" by 9"
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Scrap paper
  • Iron

Directions:

  1. Trace a hanger onto a piece of scrap paper to make a pattern. Add1/2″ seam allowance to the top and 1 1/2″ allowance to the bottom of the pattern.
  2. Cut out 2 hanger patterns from the cloth (even two coordinating fabrics works!) and hem the bottoms by turning up 1/4″ and stitching.
  3. Place right sides together, pin, and stitch along the top, leaving a 1/2″ slot open in the center to slip the hanger through. The bottom stays open so you can remove the hanger, if needed.
  4. Turn right side out and press with iron.
