Fabric-Covered Folders
Here is a simple craft that will make your “spring cleaning” more fun. I covered my file folders with eye-catching fabrics to enhance the time I will spend organizing the paperwork and receipts I have been collecting throughout the year. Now I have no more excuses . . . it’s time to stop procrastinating and get back to organizing those bills. 🙂
Materials
- Fabric
- File Folders
- Spray Adhesive
- Scissors or a Rotary Cutter
Directions
- Choose your fabric. Fat quarters are an ideal choice, because if you measure and cut carefully, you will have just enough fabric for two folders.
- Trim the fabric so that it is slightly larger than the folder all of the way around. The less fabric there is around the edges of the folder, the more careful you will have to be with it later. Set the fabric aside and apply a generous, even coat of spray adhesive to the outside of the folder. Make sure all of the edges are thoroughly covered with adhesive.
- Put the folder back on the table (sticky side up!), and gently place the fabric on top. It is best to start at one end and gently move toward the other end.
- Using a credit card, start at the center of the folder and gently press all of the air bubbles and wrinkles out to the edges of the fabric. By the time you are done, you should have a nice, smooth surface.
- Flip your folder over and use your rotary cutter or scissors to trim away the excess fabric.

The fabric I used is by a designer Alexander Henry. The prints are super colorful and modern and this designer makes prints from many different themes. My trick is to use unexpected patterns together that still family because of colors, contrasting fabrics look great together!

These are super cute!! I am going to do this with my daughters, but I'm gonna do this with school folders and just make a slit where the papers would go. Thanks for a cute lil idea!! And these fabrics you have on here are really, really cute! I love colorful stuff....you should see my house...haha!

I absolutely love this idea! Did you use the same type of fabric for all of them? I'm just wondering if some fabrics stick better. Also, about how much fabric was required for each folder? I want to go out and buy some fabric now! :)

Brittany, Do you know of the place called Purl SoHo. Their warehouse is on Red Hill in Tustin. The fabric there is amazing...all the Moda designers, Alexander Henry, Kaffe Fassett, etc. They have lots of products bundled in color families plus tons of bolts. The other side of the warehouse is all yarn....they ship the internet orders out of there. The store is in New York City. Check out the website www.purlbee.com.
Thanks for all your creative ideas!
Bless you and the kids!
