This is a fun and easy craft that can make your little one look like a prince or princess. I like to make them for birthdays, but really anytime can be dress-up time.

I made a matching wand for Stella’s birthday by wrapping some ribbon around a wooden dowel and attached a starburst on the end to match her crown.

This craft is great for a beginning sewer (you can even hand-stitch it if you don’t have a sewing machine) and the materials are really inexpensive.

Needed Materials:

  • Two pieces of wool felt (at least 5-1/2” x 14-1/2”)
  • Some other scraps of felt in different colors for embellishing
  • 2-1/4” x 10” piece of coordinating fabric
  • 5-1/2” long piece of 3/4” elastic
  • Coordinating thread
  • Small decorative items (vintage buttons, gems, etc)
  • Pattern for Crown (download here)

Instructions:

  1. Cut out the crown pieces (using pattern) from two different colors of wool felt. Trim the outside crown piece down about 1/4” on all sides except the ends. I used pinking shears on mine to make it a little funkier.
  2. Sew around the edges of the top and bottom crown pieces to achieve a layered look. Leave the sides unsewn so you can add the elastic later.
  3. Cut out squares of scrap felt—one approximately 2-5/8” and one 2-1/4”. Cut out your child’s initials (approximately 1-1/2” tall) and sew them onto the smaller square. Then place the smaller square on top of the larger one and sew these together too.
  4. Cut out decorations from the felt scraps or any other embellishing you want. Sew these onto the front of the crown. I used the decorative stitching on my sewing machine to do this.
  5. Fold the fabric strip in half the long way, with the right sides facing each other, and sew a 1/4” seam along the open edge. Turn the strip right-side out. Insert the elastic, scrunching up the fabric as necessary so the ends meet. Sew each end closed through the fabric and the elastic.
  6. Insert the elastic piece, with the seam to the back, into one end of the crown between the two layers and sew across the ends through both layers and the elastic in the middle. You can backstitch over that line for extra durability. Insert the other end of the elastic piece into the other side of the crown, being careful not to twist it. Stitch across that end the same way as the first.
  7. Trim all your threads, and you’ll have a crown fit for royalty.
