In the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, there was a tradition of hanging adorable miniature boxes of candies and toys on the Christmas tree for family members to enjoy on Christmas morning. Since those boxes are hard to come by, I decided to make my own version of this idea. But why wait until Christmas morning? Fill them and hang them all season long! Put them on your tree, on drawer knobs, or in windows. Use them as place-setting favors. Fill them with old-fashioned, nostalgic candy and bring some vintage charm into your home this holiday season!

You will need:

  • 12″x12″ square scrapbook paper (the two-sided paper is perfect, or you can glue your paper to some cute holiday wrapping paper to make it two-sided)
  • 20 gauge wire (found in the floral section of the craft store)
  • Mod Podge
  • Clear glitter (optional)
  • Scalloped scissors (optional)
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Small hole puncher
  • Picture, card, or gift tag embellishments (optional) — you can purchase adorable digital downloadable vintage Christmas images on etsy.com to use
  • Beads, pearls, etc. (optional)
  • Candy — nostalgic holiday candy can be found at reasonable prices at some grocery stores

Directions:

  1. Start by making your triangle. Take your piece of scrapbook paper and start at one side. It will be 12 inches long. Take a ruler and measure in 6 inches on one edge; make a small dot. From the 6-inch dot, and beginning at the edge of the paper, measure 7 inches in. Make a dot. Now from that 7-inch dot, draw a straight line up to one corner on the left, and another line to the corner on the right. You should have a triangle, with one side being 12 inches long. Cut it out with your scalloped scissors all the way around the triangle.
  2. To make the cone shape, my best advice would be to google a step-by-step demonstration on making a parchment decorating bag. If you have a cake-decorating book, they will also have a “how to.” Just take the right point and fold in, rolling the paper. Glue your point down. Then take your left point and fold around the outside of the cone and glue down. It might take a bit of practice, so I suggest you use a paper you don’t mind ruining for your first try.
  3. Now put a thick coat of Mod Podge on the outside of the cone. Let it dry. Apply another thick coat and sprinkle your glitter all over this coat. Allow to dry. Using your hole punch, make one hole on each side. Now take your wire and make the desired length handle. Make sure that there is enough on each end left over to add beads and to twist the ends. This keeps the handles from slipping out.
  4. Now add your cards, images, or gift tag to the front with hot glue. Fill with candy and enjoy!
